Reverse osmosis drinking water is achieved through a filtration system called reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis is by far, one of the most popular ways to purify water that is more efficient than a simple filtration system.
If we talk about reverse osmosis, this involves the movement of water from an area of higher solute concentration to an area of lower solute concentration through a semi permeable membrane. It is known as a reverse osmosis procedure because conventional osmosis involves the movement of water from lower solute concentration to a higher solute concentration.
In a reverse osmosis process, the possible contaminated water becomes the area of higher solute concentration thereby a reverse osmosis is done to move the water from that area to a more purified form, which is safer from drinking.
During the procedure of reverse osmosis, the water will move from the higher concentration (one side of the membrane where water impurities are present) to a lower concentration (the other side of the membrane where there are no water impurities). As the water shifts from one side of the membrane to the other, the solute particles, which resemble the water impurities, are left on the other side making the water purer.

Since the drinking water has been purified, most of the large ions present in water are removed to make it purer. These impurities may be composed of microorganisms, soil particles and minerals present in water. Nevertheless, it can still contain trace minerals needed by the body such as fluoride. This is the main difference between a reverse osmosis water from a distilled water because distilled water does not contain any mineral in it, including fluoride which is needed for healthier teeth in children and adults.
Advantage of Reverse Osmosis Water from Filtered Water
Some homes use a filtering device attached to the faucet to make the water cleaner. However, using reverse osmosis is still more beneficial. Simple filtration only involves physical filtration, which means that it will just get rid of the possible physical contaminants in water such as soil particles and other debris. In reverse osmosis, small ions are also removed and it also utilizes UV radiation to kill any potential pathogens in the drinking water.
The Reverse Osmosis Process
Reverse osmosis is undertaken through the following steps:
• Passing of water through a sediment filter to remove rust and calcium carbonate.
• Passing through a second sediment filter to remove smaller particles.
• Passing through an activated carbon filter to remove organic materials such as chlorine.
• Passing through the reverse osmosis filter, which is the main filter where purified water already escapes.
• Passing through a second carbon filter to further remove any impurities that has passed through the main filter.
• Passing through a UV lamp to further remove small microorganisms that have not been removed by the previous stages.
