How to choose a qualified Acupuncture Practitioner
- Florida and the majority other states require acupuncturists to be licensed to assure they have completed the necessary education and training to practice. A licensed acupuncturist will have L.Ac. following their name which stands for Licensed Acupuncturist. Medical doctors and Chiropractors can also preform acupuncture if they completed the proper postgraduate program of study. If a Chiropractor or Medical Doctor does acupuncture they will be labeled as “Certified in Acupuncture”
- When choosing a qualified Acupuncture Practitioner make sure to find one that is properly educated and certified.
- In Florida the Educational Requirements list as follows: An applicant must complete a 3-yr study in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Effective July 1, 2001, a 4-yr course of study in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is required by the board. Prior to August 1, 1997 only a 2-yr course of study was required.
- Acupuncturists are required to obtain continuing education to retain active license. The NCCAOM handles the majority of continuing education in Acupuncture. Florida and California are two states that have their own regulatory agencies. California requires re-license of Licensed Acupuncturists every two years with fifty continuing educational units. The Florida Board requires acupuncturists to complete 30 hours in continuing education every two years. Florida calculates one hour of continue education for every sixty minutes, California calculates one unit for every fifty minutes of course time.
