Sciatica neuritis is a group of symptoms that arise due to the compression of the spinal nerves. This may also occur as a result of irritation or compression of the right or left sciatic nerves. Because of the location of the sciatic nerves, the pain is usually felt on the lower back, legs, foot and buttocks. The sciatic nerves are responsible for innervating the lower limbs and are responsible for their movements. When the sciatic nerve is affected, not only pain can be felt, but also other symptoms such as numbness, weakness, limitations in leg movements and tingling sensations on the limbs. However, sciatica pain has been the most apparent symptom because it tends to be severe and debilitating.

Sciatica pain relief is often sought by patients to improve their functioning especially on the lower extremities. There are various forms of sciatica pain treatment such as:

Warm and Cold packs

Ice and heat can be applied to relieve pain. Cold packs aid to numb the area and reduce pain sensation. Hot compress also relaxes the muscles around the sciatic nerve to prevent further pain. Apply alternate ice and heat for 15 minutes up to three times a day.

Bed rest with gradual activities

Bed rest for one to two days has been found to provide beneficial results to patients with sciatica to reduce pain because of preventing further muscle spasm on the area that overlies the sciatic nerve. However, activities should be started gradually after two days to improve flexibility of the back. Avoid prolonged bed rest to prevent loss of muscle tone and formation of blood clots in the legs.

Medications

Medications such as analgesics and opioids are used to relive pain temporarily. Mild pain may be relieved by analgesics and moderate to severe pain may be relieved with opioids. However, pain medications should not be taken for longer periods because of possible gastric irritation and other symptoms. Anticonvulsants may also be used to stabilize the nerve impulse transmission and may reduce neuropathic pain from sciatica. In addition, antidepressants such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake inhibitors have been shown to elevate mood, thus relieving dull pain signals.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is the treatment of choice for mild to moderate cases of sciatica pain. Physical therapy allows for improved motion of the leg along with pain reduction.

Surgery

Surgery is a treatment option for patients with severe sciatica pain as a result of disk herniation. Surgery involves the repair of the herniated disc to relieve nerve compression.

Chiropractic care

Chiropractic care is also a safe and effective treatment in the presence of sciatica pain. It involves spinal manipulation to remove vertebral subluxations or the impediment of the nerves as a result of problems in the vertebral column. Chiropractors like Dr. Mohr, your Tampa chiropractor, not only involve spinal manipulation, but also exercise, physical therapy, massage and lifestyle modification, which is considered a holistic management for sciatica pain.
