What is Reverse Osmosis?
Reverse osmosis is a filtration system that removes any types of ions as well as large molecules when pressure is applied to the solution on side of the selective membrane. Normal Osmosis is the process by which solvent particles transfer from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration in order to equalize the osmotic pressure. In a reverse osmosis, the water or the solvent actually passes through the membrane into an area with lesser solute concentration; thereby the term, reverse osmosis. In reverse osmosis, the solvent is allowed to pass to the other side where there are no solutes (lower solute concentration) and the solute is retained in the other side of the membrane.
Reverse osmosis utilizes a selective membrane wherein it only allows smaller molecules such as the solvent molecules to pass and not the larger ions or molecules.

The reverse osmosis system for water purification usually involves the passing of water through the following:

• An Activated carbon filter. This allows organic chemicals such as chlorine to be trapped. When chlorine passes through the reverse osmosis membranes, it may damage the system; thereby chlorine needs to be filtered early in the process.
• A reverse osmosis filter. This is the main filter, which is a thin film composite membrane.
• A second carbon filter. This second carbon filter further captures substances or chemicals that were not removed by the reverse osmosis filter.
• An ultraviolet lamp. The UV light sterilizes various microorganisms that may have passed through the various filtering systems. The Ultraviolet lamp is not present in all reverse osmosis water purification systems. Nevertheless, a UV lamp is more beneficial to kill possible microorganisms that have escaped through leaks in the system.
